About 8-hour trip from Pirin Hut to Melnik a beautiful museum town at the foot of South Pirin. Our track goes mainly down the southern slopes of the mountain. When approaching Melnik, we see that the landscape here is completely different from the one in the high parts of the mountain. We are all surrounded by vertical cliffs, unusual rocky formations and valleys. The uniqueness of the place is that they are made of soft sandstone, which Nature has sculptured into these unbelievable rock phenomena for thousands of years. The climate is dry and nights are warm. Melnik is one of the few places in Europe, where you can see the only European species of Ghekon family, namely Kotschys Gecko / Cyrtodactylus Kotschyi /. This small reptile is about 3-5 cm long and resembles a lizard. It is incredibly quick and agile scaling up the vertical walls of the houses, where it usually catches insects at night. We will have dinner and spend the night at the local hotel. Packed lunch.

The walk today will be very easy of about 2 hours from Melnik to Rozhen Monastery. This is a small monastery of exquisite beauty. It is also an historic place, where the local citizens fought against Turkish occupants. After we see the monastery, we will have lunch at the local tavern, called mehana in Bulgarian/ Mehana is a typical restaurant serving traditional Bulgarian dishes and drinks/, where we will try the local specialties and famous Melnik wine. Early in the afternoon, our transport waiting near the monastery will take us back to Melnik, where our cultural cuisine program will go on. We will get to know the architecture and history of the town and visit a typical Melnik wine-cellar carved in the rocks, where we will go on trying various wines and refreshments. And we shouldnt forget that dinner with more wine and specialties is still ahead of us. So, some of us earlier and some later, some walking straight and others staggering on their feet in small groups, we get back to the cozy rooms to spend the last night of this unforgettable holiday in Bulgaria.
